BC recognizes the importance of education in life, and we are proud to support organizations that help people of all ages to prepare for bright futures. Throughout BC's history, many students and their parents as well as teachers have benefited from BC's sponsorship of educational programs.
Helping college students at historically black colleges and universities, for example, has been an important focus for BC. Over the past five years, BC has contributed nearly $60,000 to the Tom Joyner Foundation to help students encountering financial difficulties to remain in school. In addition, through the Excellence in Teaching awards, BC honors hardworking educators who use innovative teaching methods and mentor students.
Here are two examples of other educational initiatives that received BC's support through the "Working Where It Counts" program.
- Read Seed, Inc., an organization that began in 2002 with a mission to provide new books to children living in low-income households, was awarded a BC grant to purchase new books for its Books in a Bag program. Since its inception, over 6,000 books have been distributed to children in Alamance, Durham, Edgecombe, Granville, Nash, Orange, and Person counties in North Carolina. This summer, Read Seed will distribute books to every Durham public housing resident from up to 7 years of age.
- BC Powder awarded funds to the Durham Literacy Center towards the development of a Teen Math Academy to help adults and out-of-school teens prepare for the GED exam. The Literacy Center provides daily, tuition-free literacy instruction to more than 500 adults and out-of-school teens. Together with volunteers, a small team of professional educators provides instruction in reading, writing, high school equivalency, and technology to aid in a successful transition to higher education and the work force. The Durham Literacy Center currently consists of three programs including Teen GED, Adult Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages.
